3.4.12     Technology Use

The institution's use of technology enhances student learning and is appropriate for meeting the objectives of its programs. Students have access to and training in the use of technology.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is responsible for overseeing and coordinating learning technology for the university. DoIT, led by the vice chancellor for information technology and chief information officer, strives to implement the latest advances in new technologies to support our faculty in the teaching and learning environment and to provide current technology to serve the needs of our students, faculty, and staff [1].

The assistant vice chancellor for teaching and learning technology is responsible for developing, deploying, and managing the infrastructure and curriculum to deliver the technology proficiencies and professional development competencies of the university community. The Teaching and Learning Technology unit engages in community-based initiatives to address the "digital divide."  This unit also manages the Instructional Design Development and Support Department, which offers Blackboard services and e-Learning services.

The support services director is responsible for Aggie Technical Support [ATS], formerly Aggie Help Desk, Student Technology Services [STS], and all academic labs, residence halls labs, and technical functional consultants. This office provides the day-to-day management and support of the academic, administrative, and auxiliary campus computing systems.

Campus-wide Communications and Training: To ensure that all personnel who interact with students are technology-savvy, DoIT provides training to faculty and staff on non-instructional software such as Microsoft, Lotus Notes and SharePoint.  The initiative, called AggieTrain Online, is a Web-based comprehensive training package for faculty and staff aimed to enhance technical skills and supplement existing training. AggieTrain is also offered to students as a means to enhance and increase their ability to use Microsoft Office products in supporting the assignments. [2] [3] [4]

Instructional Support:

Blackboard Services:  This is the unit that manages the Blackboard eLearning software platform used for online and Web-enhanced courses.  In Blackboard, students will find course information, assignments, announcements and other helpful tools and features that enhance their use of technology in both online and campus courses [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10]. Faculty will find brochures ranging from adding test brochures to exporting courses and how to create assessments brochures [11], [12], [13], [14], [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23], [24], [25], [26], [27], [28], [29], [30], [31], [32], [33], [34], [35], [36].

General Purpose Learning Environments: The academic labs and residence hall labs provide students with complete access to computing facilities at convenient hours [37]. Centralized management provides a well-equipped environment for students and faculty to access the tools they need to perform.  The lab functional consultants provide a wide array of services that keep these environments accessible and functioning.  Eighteen academic computer labs are distributed across campus in various classroom buildings, in addition to several computer labs in the Bluford Library.  The general purpose/academic labs in the College of Engineering, School of Nursing, School of Technology, Corbett Sports Complex, and portions of Craig Hall, housing the School of Business & Economics, have state-of-the-art desktop computer equipment and HP 9040n printers to support the academic matriculation of all students and faculty.  Morrow Hall, a residence facility, contains a state-of-the-art ergonomic lab that includes iMAC computers, plasma displays, and port access.  Adequacy of lab space is determined by monitoring the utilization of seats and is reviewed each semester.  Over 600 computers are available along with printers and other peripherals.

Laptop Checkout Program: The laptop checkout program allows students to check out a computer for use in the library or take it out of the library for up to three days just as they would check out a book.

Networking and Infrastructure: North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (A&T) is part of the world's foremost information technology service delivered through the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NCREN).  NCREN, a fiber-optic infrastructure, provides Internet, video, audio, data and computing network service to all sixteen of North Carolina's public institutions that grant baccalaureate degrees, as well as the North Carolina School of Science and Math.  NCREN also provides access to national and international research networks, including Internet2 and the National LambdaRail, enabling global research and collaboration [40].

Wireless Network: Full wireless coverage is provided in all academic and administrative buildings. Residential buildings have wireless coverage in common areas only.  However, the new Aggie Lawn wireless technology has been introduced and will provide wireless access campus wide.  Additionally, users may connect to the network via the wireless signals from inside nearby buildings [41].

RESNET: ResNet is A&T's computing program for students living on campus in the residence halls. Each residence hall is equipped with network connections that enable students to have high-speed access to the campus network and the internet. ResNet support is provided via Aggie Tech Support in cooperation with Student Technology Services (STS) and the Network Services Group. [39]

E-mail Services: The university encourages the use of the campus e-mail system and access to the system is available to administrators, faculty, staff, and students [38].

Student Technology Services: The Student Technology Services (STS) organization enables undergraduate students to develop leadership, fiscal responsibility, and strategic planning skills in conjunction with the goals of the DoIT organization.  The STS team supplements many of the DoIT areas including the laptop checkout program, Aggie Technical Support, telecommunications, and security/audits.  By working with professionals in these areas, the STS students' understanding of applied technology is enhanced.
